Antique Venetian Gooseberry Bead Necklace Carved Jade Pendant

Hand knotted using a macramé technique, these antique gooseberry beads were made in Venice by the Venetian glass guilds. They earned their name by the mottled appearance. They were worn as a form of status and currency and traded during the trans-Saharan and trans-Atlantic bead trade. The yellow carved jade in the very famous neolithic Hongshan culture style. The artisan clasp is sterling silver and tiger’s eye. -

The English Prosser brothers patented a method in 1840 for pressing powdered ceramic or porcelain with binding agents into buttons, a technique later adapted by a Frenchman who applied the same button-press process to beadmaking, giving rise to Prosser beads. These beads are made from mixed with binding materials, then pressed in molds under heat to form durable, brightly colored beads with crisp shapes. Pair with companion piece TC-1049. -
